Unlike subscription satellite and cable TV, Freesat only requires a one off payment and no regular subscription fees. This may remind you of the ´good old days´ when everything on TV was broadcast free via antenna. The Freesat service offers the variety and quality of modern digital TV coupled with original free terrestrial channels.

Freesat is a way to provide additional programming to areas of Britain that are not already covered by Freeview; this is also provided by the ITV and BBC. Freeview may be available throughout the majority of the UK; Freesat covers more or less all of the UK.

To gain the advantages of Freesat services, the first requirements are a set top box or television able to receive Freesat and a satellite dish. As the Freesat signal use the same satellites as other providers, viewers that already have a dish can use this to receive Freesat.

Panasonic were the first of the manufacturer to integrate Freesat into some models of their televisions and currently has a firm grip on this market. However, it has been announced that Sony will enter this market fairly soon.

Freesat TV’s have the receiver integrated into the television itself, eliminating the need for a separate converter.

Panasonic has released a good variety of Freesat TVs in both LCD and Plasma forms. There are currently around 15 different Panasonic Freesat TVs with this due to increase. Their current products range in size from 32" to a huge 65" inch set. All set are HD Ready with some of them being 1080P Full HD.

In general, the larger sets (42 inches and above) are usually Plasma TVs with the sets 37" or smaller being LCD TVs. Both types are able to provide free air programming in HD without the need for a conversion unit.

Freesat may still be in early stages as the launch was delayed by approximately 2 years due to various issues. Freesat had high uptake expectations but these were not met, however, the number of channels has consistently grown since its launch in May 2008 with more planned to be broadcast in HD over the next couple of years, making it one of best TV services available at the moment.
