Up until now high definition has only been available via a satellite dish or fibre optic cables, which has limited access to people who do not live in a cable areas or who have been put off by unsightly satellite dishes pinned to the side of their home. Freeview-HD works in a totally different way without relying on ugly satellite dishes or fibre optic cables, as it uses a standard external aerial connection. Thanks to the digital switch over, which is being rolled out across the country along with improvements to transmitters, high definition can now be received via a standard external aerial and a Freeview-HD tuner.

Freeview-HD works in exactly the same way as standard Freeview. There are not set up charges involved like there is with Freesat-HD, there is no monthly subscription fee, or scary contract. Simply plug your Freeview-HD device into your aerial connection, and start enjoy all the standard Freeview channels like BBC Three, ITV2 and Film Four, plus the free to view high definition channels from the BBC and ITV. One piece of advice would be to check that Freeview-HD is available in your area, by visiting the Freeview website, especially if your area has not taken part in the digital switch over yet.

Sony TVs and Panasonic Televisions have been the first to introduce Freeview-HD tuners that are built in on some of their LCD TVs and plasma televisions. If you are not ready for an upgrade, then keep your eyes open for a Freeview-HD tuner or DVD player with a built in Freeview-HD tuner.
